Zoe Keating, the One-Woman Orchestra
When you think of sampling, live looping and the use of effects, you would usually think of an electro band or a pop group, not classical music. However, taking her cello, rigging it up to a laptop and using some fancy foot skills with a MIDI controller, Zoe Keating has successfully transcended the concepts of what can be done with music, essentially creating a one-woman symphonic experience. Intricately layering her cello on top of itself, Keating creates a musical experience that parallels a full string quartet, beautifully arranged to create a haunting, multi-part work of art.
Classically trained on the cello since a tender age of eight, Canadian born Keating’s unique music crosses genres with astonishing ease. Her first album, One Cello x 16: Natoma, spent time at No.1 on the iTunes classical chart whilst simultaneously sitting at No.2 on the electronica chart. Her latest album, Into the Trees, spent 49 weeks on the Billboard classical charts, peaking at No.7.
Despite this undeniable success on a musical level, Keating has garnered worldwide respect for her success as a musical entrepreneur. Unsigned, Keating has managed to sell over 45,000 records and tour the world. With a staggering 1.3 million Twitter followers, Keating personifies the artist-as-entrepreneur ideal, with her grass-roots approach resulting in being named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.
With cello, laptop, and incredible musical talent, Keating brings her unique take on the classical genre to The Toff in Town on the 30th of May. Get your permanent marker out right now and put a solid black line through any plans you may have. Half classical, half electro, Zoe Keating’s one-woman symphony cannot be missed.
