Yakkin’ with Kacy Hill
She’s someone who you may not have heard too much of yet. 22 year old Kacy Hill is the protege of Kanye West, best mates with Jack Garratt and has modelled for American Apparel. Her voice is sharper and sweeter than a sugar coated butchers knife, and will be in the country in July for Splendour in the Grass. Vulture Magazine scored a few minutes of this wonderland child.
Vulture Magazine: Tell us who Kacy Hill is exactly?
Kacy Hill: I think I’m just a female artist and I’m trying to figure out my place in the world. I dunno. I’m a person in the world!
VM: And you’re signed to Kanye West’s record label but we have to ask how you went from being a dancer on the Yeezy Tour to him hearing your music and signing you.
KH: That kind of came about because, I left after the first leg of the tour and he ended up hearing my music through another friend on tour and he flew me out to Atlantic City shortly after I left and I kind of got a record deal out of that. Kind of crazy!
VM: Wow! And at any point were you just like, ‘This is too good to be true, wtf??!’?
KH: I think I still feel that way. Yeah it’s like a little insane and surreal and just feels like, really monstrous.
VM: Monstrous is a good word for it! Where does your mind wander to when you daydream since you’re kind of living quite a big dream already, where is it you go and dream bigger to?
KH: Um, I think I’m just starting with what I am right now, like, I want to be doing what I’m doing for whatever, the next fifty years until I’m much older. I think that’s the dream, just to be able to do it until I can like, shrivel up.
VM: At 21, having now been in the music industry for a little bit, what have you learned about yourself since the industry matures people quickly.
KH: I think I’ve learned how to assert myself and how to believe in an idea that I have and, I’ve also learned how to be patient. That’s like, the biggest thing. I think I’m, by default, like the most impatient person and I think it just takes a lot of time to make something really, really good and especially to make a body of work that’s good and feels cohesive and well brought out. So yeah, I’ve just been taught a lot of patience.
VM: Do you have any other creative outlets that you enjoy?
KH: Um, I guess there’s fashion and I think that’s another really important creative outlet for me, especially for music- I’ve always thought that fashion and music have had a place together and I think that’s really important as far as creating a world as an artist. So honestly, I just spend a lot of time writing, and that’s really important to me. I guess, I dunno, decorating my apartment?? But I don’t think that’s anything, that’s just like, zoning out.
VM: And what kind of things do you get up to while you’re passing time on tour?
KH: I mostly like to eat! I’m a big fan of food and I know everyone says that, but I genuinely just love food. Like especially when me and my manager are anywhere together we always find the best spots in whatever city we’re in and I am passionate about eating really, really good food and always finding the best food I can.
VM: MMMmm. OK! So, we’ve got our eye on you, Kacy Hill, but who is it that you have your eye on?
KH: Um, ooh I don’t know! That’s a hard one. I guess Christine and the Queens, I think she’s the most exciting thing to come out of the last few years. I just think she redefines gender boundaries, she’s an incredible performer, she’s and incredible writer. I just think the world she’s made is so special.
VM: And you’re playing Splendour in the Grass, and Australia hasn’t seen you before. What kind of show do you put on?
KH: I perform with my band which is my drummer, she has an acoustic thing and does some drum type stuff. And I have my keys player and he does his thing. But I dunno, it’s just about making the music come to life and I’m not like, I don’t have any dance routines sadly but, making the music come to life and like connecting with an audience.
