VERNISSAGE – Melbourne Art Fair 2012

Vernissage: Varnishing (French)

According to Wikipedia, it is a term used for a preview of an art exhibition, often private, before the formal opening. Guests may be served canapes and wine as they discuss with artists and others the works in the exhibition. If the vernissage is not open to the public, but only for invited guests, it is often called a private view.

Did someone mention canapés, wine and private view? Then just try keeping Vulture away. Our resident connoisseur of art and classy knees ups, Betty Barker will once more take on the tough assignments. She will report back on the Melbourne Art Fair 2012 Vernissage, precursor to the Melbourne Art Fair 2012. The Fair presents contemporary art from some thousands of artists represented by over 70 selected national and international galleries featuring paintings, sculpture, photography, installations and multimedia artworks created by over 900 artists and attracting up to 30,000 visitors.

Alongside the exhibitions, additional programs include Artist Commissions, Project Rooms featuring the works, an Education Program and free public Lectures and Forums with artists, curators, and international guests.

Stay tuned for Betty’s take on the art, ambience and appetisers at what promises to be the Supreme Salon of the year.
