The Vulture Nest: Latest Music News

Hands up if you got a ticket to Splendour. Don’t feel bad if you didn’t, because unless you had clicked ‘refresh’ at 9am sharp, chances are you missed out. One of the biggest music festivals in Australia sold out in record time of 41 minutes.  Geez Louise, quick fingers, guys. Camping tickets were the first to go, selling out in 15 goddamn minutes. We’re not quite sure what made the difference between the seemingly underwhelming ticket sales of last year, but there might be several factors: the dumping of huge name headliners to a more diverse range or acts, the return to Byron Bay or the fact that tickets were about $200 cheaper. Don’t stress, for those of you who couldn’t get your mitts on tickets, The Vulture will be tweeting live from the festival and sideshows go on sale THIS FRIDAY.

You know there’s something significantly going astray when the music of Animal Collective and Hot Chip are being featured on an episode of The Simpsons entitled ‘A Totally Fun Thing That Bart Will Never Do Again.’ Don’t get us wrong, we love The Simpsons, but as far as we’re concerned, our indie music has no place in a program that has severely dropped in quality since its inception in the late 80s. What can we say? We’re a pretty possessive bunch.

The saxophonist who toured with The Killers, Thomas Marth, was tragically found dead in his Las Vegas home on April 25th after an apparent suicide. He was 33 years old. Marth toured with the band throughout 2008 and 2009 and recorded with them on their albums Sam’s Town and Day & Age. The Killers tweeted:  “last night we lost our friend Thomas Marth. Our prayers are with his family, there’s a light missing in Las Vegas tonight. Travel well, Tommy.”

Mysterious Melbourne collective The Avalanches have some explaining to do, as they may have released a new mixtape. Maybe. Late last week, they posted a rather cryptic link on their Twitter account to a mix called ‘Sleepy Bedtime Mix for the Young Ones,’ saying that it may or may not be a mix tape from  ♥ ∆v∆L∆NCH∑≤ ♥. We’ve been anticipating and pleading for a new release for about the last five years now, but a representative from Modular, The Avalanches’ label, claims they have no knowledge of the mixtape. Weird.  You can download it for fwee here.

In one final bit of exciting news, The Vulture is proud to announce we will be ruffling our feathers at party in celebration of our first birthday. Bringing Custom Kings out of an over twelve-month sabbatical and introducing The Pretty Littles and Cold Hiker, and DJ Prenup spinning tracks until the wee hours, the night is sure to be absolutely huge. We look forward to writing ourselves off with you. Tickets are only $12 and available now.
