The Vulture Nest: Latest Music News

It’s been a huge week of festival announcements, so if you’re feeling like you’re a bit behind the eight ball, it’s understandable. Let’s hop to it and get informed in a brief yet efficient summary.

All Tomorrow’s Parties will make its triumphant return to Australia under the guise of “I’ll Be Your Mirror.” Curated by the one and only the Drones, the festival will take place over two days in Altona, Melbourne. The bill includes My Bloody Valentine (it’s their first Australian show in 20 years), the Drones themselves, Thee Oh Sees and many more.

Soundwave has packed a punch with the line up of this year. Metal gods Metallica, Blink 182 complete with Travis Barker, the Offspring (very, very fly) and dozens more.

The first act to play Field Day has been revealed as Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. The annual festival is held on New Year’s Day at The Domain in Sydney, and the full line up will be released shortly.

The infamous New Year’s Eve Pyramid Rock festival at Phillip Island has made their first round of announcements, too. So far, we’ve got a pretty hiphop heavy bill, including 360, Illy, Urthboy, Children Collide, Dcup (remember ‘We No Speak Americano?) and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Tickets go on sale September 24.

Two Door Cinema Club and the Hives have also been added to the Falls Festival line up, as well as locals Angus Stone and ex-Australian idol contender come indie heart throb Matt Corby.

A Melbourne independent record store – and Vulture favourite – has launched its own label. Polyester Records, which has shops in Fitzroy and the CBD, will operate purely in vinyl and will focus on LP issues of Australian acts. This is a resurrection of the store’s label, which previously existed in the 1980s through to the early 1990s. For their first release, Polyester will issue New War’s self-titled debut, followed by Grand Salvo’s Slay Me in My Sleep and distribution will be handled by music giant Inertia.

He’s one of the biggest names in Australian rock n’ roll and now, a movie about the legacy of Bon Scott is in pre-production. High Voltage Productions (how very appropriate) has begun work on the proposed docu-drama titled Bon Scott: The Legend of AC/DC with a US-based team moving ahead with the publicity and production for the film. In the meantime, why don’t you check out the line of Acca Dacca vino?

Finally, a wag of the finger goes to guitar manufacturing giant Gibson Guitar Corp, who has fallen into a bit of hot water recently. A few months ago, a section of the US Government had threatened to seize guitars from famous musicians during America’s festival season. Apparently, the 117-year-old guitar makers were using illegal wood and lumber sourced from protected forests in the production of their instruments. After an investigation that found no incriminating evidence, the company has admitted to wrongdoings and paying $US 300,000 (approximately $AU 280,000) in fines in exchange for the Feds deferring prosecution of environmental crimes. They’ve also been made to donate $50,000 (approximately $AU 47,500) to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, by order of the Justice Department.
