The Drones Drop New Track + Visuals
The Drones have recently released the second single and video from their upcoming seventh studio album Feelin Kinda Free; a bad trip you can dance to, which will be released on March 18.
The new single ‘To Think That I Once Loved You’ is a stark contrast from the political punk spew ‘Tamad Shud’ which was released in October last year. The soon to be released album was recorded at Tropical Fuck Storm Studios in Melbourne with record producer and composer Aaron Cupples who has worked with other Australian artists such as Paul Kelly and Snowman.
It begins with an eerie, extraterrestrial sounding guitar that is soon accompanied by the steady simplicity of the drums. It sounds like singer Gareth Liddiard has awoken from a three-day bender of booze, benzos and a broken heart, picked up a microphone and with his signature slurred yet sexy style and sung out all his pain. Liddiard is joined for the chorus by Melbourne band Harmony, who is there to provide exactly that. The haunting repetition of the title towards the end,‘To Think That I Once Loved You’, gives you chills up the spine.
The video, directed by Chris Mathews of Defero Productions, is a perfect visual accompaniment to the song. The blinding white backdrop, black and white shots of Lilliard and extended band along with the lighting, all promotes a bleak and depressing environment that adds to the isolated feelings of being expressed.
