Loon Lake: Thirty Three

August 11, 2012 by Grace Kwyn in Album Reviews, Latest News with 0 Comments

Loon Lake hail from country Victoria, and first came to our attention in 2011 with their debut EP Not Just Friends, a collection of catchy pop gems which had us begging for more. Now the boys have delivered, with their latest effort Thirty Three, a slightly more mature sound which reflects the busy year these guys have had- after touring with the likes of Girls, Kaiser Chiefs, Cage the Elephant and The Grates, Loon Lake have got some stories to tell.

Opening with ‘The Week’, this track is definitely more laid back than what we have come to expect from these lads, but still retains the killer riffs and driving pace we love them for. Singles ‘Bad To Me’ and ‘Cherry Lips’ have both been receiving a lot of love from triple j, and this attention is totally justified since they are some of the catchiest tunes you will hear all year. In signature Loon Lake style, jangly guitars and sing-a-long choruses feature, promising to make them firm festival favourites. However, it is with title track ‘Thirty Three’ that we truly see the change that the past year has brought to the band- far more pensive and brooding, a definite departure from their previous work. This is followed up with ‘Fantasia’, another raucous tune that will get you dancing and fill you with general happy-fun-time vibes. Thirty Three then wraps up with ‘Heart Stomper’, a slower and grittier tune which offers a tantalizing taste of what these guys are capable of.

Loon Lake have definitely developed as a band over the last few years, and this EP is a testament to their talent and hard work. Hopefully we will be seeing a lot more from them in the future, but until then keep yourself satisfied by getting your grubby mitts on a copy of Thirty Three and heading along to one of their shows.
