Josh Romig’s ‘We Are Blue Sun’ EP Review
Josh Romig’s Sun is rising. And it’s Blue.
Honing his chops as a busker on Melbourne street corners, Josh Romig spent the past couple of years garnering significant attention for his accessible but off-kilter songwriting. After capturing the ears of acclaimed songwriter Charles Jenkins, Romig was invited to perform at the Face the Music masterclass. Since then, Romig has migrated from Melbourne’s streets to the recording studio; taking with him an all-star cast of Australian musicians who’ve come together with Romig to form Blue Sun.
With Tex Perkins affiliate Shane Reilly on guitar; Jodie Lane regular Roger Bergadoz on the bass; and Paul Kelly drummer Pete Marin behind the kit; Blue Sun’s debut EP brings the most out of Romig’s songs. ‘Real Boy’ is a catchy, if twisted take on the story of Pinnochio. ‘Lockaway Light’ is a pop hit, supported by Pete Marin’s deep groove. ‘Rio’ shows off Romig’s impressive vocal chops; whilst ‘Locked in a Cage’ is just sparse and eerie enough to be affecting. These are well-crafted pop songs, complimented by the EP’s production and stellar performances from the all-star ensemble. Anyone who finds Matt Corby worth a listen will enjoy what’s going on here.
‘We Are Blue Sun’ is available on the 15th of June on RiSH Records.
