Joining them on the very rock friendly lineup are The Killers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Foals, Vampire Weekend and Animal Collective.

 

Teaming up with C3 (the organizers behind Lollapalooza) last year, it seems Big Day Out are keen to re-affirm themselves as Australia’s premier rock and roll festival, with a surprise fan backlash at Kanye West’s headlining slot at last year’s festival.

 

Festival director Ken West seems to have taken note, limiting the hip-hop slots to 360, Childish Gambino and Death Grips.

 

Dance fans may have mixed feelings as well, with Crystal Castles and Pretty Lights being the only huge name acts on the bill.

 

But if you’re a fan of rock and roll, there are plenty of names on here to salivate over. Sleigh Bells, Off!, Delta Spirit, Grinspoon, Against Me!, 

 

Jeff The Brotherhood and Hunting Grounds all find healthy spots on the bill.

 

Poor ticket sales at last year’s festival meant a downsizing in the world of the Big Day Out. This year will mark the first since 1994 that the festival won’t be making its way to Auckland.

 

This year’s early announcement is likely to ensure a wider gap for ticket sales, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers exclusivity agreement will ensure plenty of tickets will be snapped up by Chili Willy fans eager for their only glimpse of the band on our shores; with no sideshows on the horizon.

 

Similarly, over half the bands on the lineup have new albums to be dropped between now and January.

There’ll be more lineup announcements in the month’s ahead, but tickets go on sale this Thursday at 7pm, and they’ll likely sell quick!
