A Cup of Joe: Mr Robinson’s Back Home
You might know Joe Robinson as a “guitar virtuoso”. You might remember his name from this year’s Guitar Player Magazine Readers Poll, where he was crowned Best New Talent. You might recognise him as the winner of the 2008 series of Australia’s Got Talent with his performance of “Classical Gas”. Still not ringing any bells? Then now’s the time to get acquainted with the bloke.
The 21-year-old maestro hails from Temagog, NSW. (Go on, plug it into Google Maps. We didn’t know where it was, either). As a child, he first learned piano, but switched to electric guitar at age ten – “I just wanted to make up melodies.” By 13, he’d not only taken out the Australian National Songwriting Competition, but also toured with legendary muso and songwriter Tommy Emmanuel. Fast forward a couple of years, and he’s living in Nashville, Tennessee, redefining his style as he moves between purely instrumental music and a multilayered, vocally-based sound.
Robinson blends elements of blues, pop and R&B with his mellow vocals, but acoustic guitar remains the cornerstone of his music.
Fresh off a sold-out European tour, Robinson is heading home to launch his new EP Toe Jam, and he’s set to play a series of shows across the country.
