5 Minutes with Toro Y Moi
Vulture was lucky to enough catch up with Toro Y Moi, aka Chaz Bundick, shortly before he hits our shores for the second time round. The South Carolina native has had us grooving since he dropped his debut Causers Of This back in 2010, and since then we Vulturians have been so chuffed to see him grow and explore multiple genres, expanding from the chillwave movement he is, in some ways, credited with kickstarting. In our interview, we wanted to get to know the man behind Toro Y Moi and what floats his boat.
V: We loved your collaboration with Tyler the Creator. You both have quite different sounds, tell us what it was like working with him and OFWGKTA?
CB: They are hilarious, oh my god it’s a 24hr joke fest. For real though, they’re rad.
V: How did you get in touch with them?
V: We’ve heard you’re already working on new material. Any hints on some future collaborations?
CB: Yes, I’m working on music with a living legend, can’t say his/her name
V: 2013 will be your second time performing down under. How do you find the Australian crowd?
CB: Australian’s love to dance, it’s awesome playing there.
V: Got any phobias?
CB: Yeah eating shit off the ground.
V: What is you favorite song to belt out in the car or for karaoke?
CB: Mystikal FT Pharrell – ‘Shake Ya Ass’
V: What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?
CB: One time when I was in middle school I got caught with cyber porn.
V: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
CB: At home chilling with my wife and kids. I think kids are awesome, the trick is to raise them to not be stupid.
V: What is the best and worst thing in music at the moment?
CB: The best thing is the unheard stuff and the worst thing is fashionista-tumblr-worshiping-trap beats.
V: What are you listening to lately?
CB: A lot of Can and Ride.
V: What’s your favorite album by another artist?
CB: Pinkerton by Weezer
V: What song of yours are you most proud of? Why?
CB: ‘New Loved Ones’, because it was written for my mom.
V: If you could have one super power what would it be and why?
CB: Probably flight cause I’d save money on transportation. I’d be like, ‘yeah, hold on, I’ll fly there in like 5 minutes.’
V: What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you on tour?
CB: So many but I guess one was when I we had to play at 6am for the 24hr festival in Japan. We flew straight in… I was so delusional.
V: How do you keep your music videos fresh?
CB: We just talk about what would be cool visually…though I think videos are getting harder because so much has been done and so many are being put out in a short amount of time… kinda feels like the best thing to do is just make a vignette (which is what’s happening).
V: What can we expect to find on your new release Anything in ReturnI?
CB: A little bit of house, a little bit of r’n’b. I dunno I like all kinds of music, everything from rap to Turkish psych rock.
Toro Y Moi plays Golden Plains + Adelaide Festival, plus two sideshows in March:
